Caring for people is a big responsibility, but it can also feel overwhelming. When you're a parent, foster carer, a care professional, or just someone who is supporting someone they love, it is so easy to pour so much of yourself into the people who need you.
But when the emotional weight becomes too much, what happens next?
This is where compassion fatigue can appear. It's more than feeling tired, it's the emotional and phsyical exhaustion that comes from constantly giving to others without replenishing yourself.
You can't pour from an empty cup.

Signs of compassion fatigue
Compassion fatigue can look different for differnt people. But here are some ways it might manifest:
Feeling emotionally drained, detached or "out of it"
Irritability, frustration, or feeling hopeless
Struggling to empathise with those you care for
Physical symptoms like headaches, trouble sleeping, or exhaustion (no matter how much you sleep)
No longer enjoying what you once loved
If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Many carers and professionals experience this at some point, which is understandbale. If you can recognise it early, you can take steps to care for yourself too.

How to support yourself
Accept how you truly feel. It’s okay to admit when you’re struggling, it's the first step in getting the right support. Bottling things up only makes it harder.
Set boundaries. You really can’t pour from an empty cup, although you may want to. Saying no when you need to isn’t selfish, it’s absolutely necessary.
Prioritise self-care. Even small moments of rest, going for a walk, or doing the activities you love can help restore your energy, and help you feel more like yourself.
Seek support. You are not alone in how you feel. Talking to someone who understands, like a counsellor, can help you process your feelings in a safe space.
Being a carer holds a lot of responsibility, but it doesn't mean you have to neglect yourself. Your wellbeing matters is just as important as those you support.
If compassion fatigue is weighing you down, I’m here to help you carry the load.
